Water Damage And Do It Yourself

There are many ways that you can experience water damage. It is usually a messy horrible event. The clean up and sometimes renovations or repairs can be overwhelming.

The kids left the tap running in the tub on the second floor. The water filled the tub and started running down the hallway and worst of it created a leak down through the walls. Finally the bathtub was emptied and there is a really big mess to clean up.

To get the excess water out of the carpet a vacuum that picks up water is used. Then you have to dry it thoroughly. This is an important step because of the problem with mold and mildew growing. It does not take long for it to grow out of control.

Since, in this case, the entire carpet is wet, after removing the water if it is not too heavy remove it completely. Remove the tacks and then lift it up off the floor. Check the padding and if the padding is wet it must also be removed. Padding material often falls apart when wet so you may be removing it in pieces. If the padding is glued to the floor then you can use a scraper to lift it off.

Once removed you can place your carpet in the sun out of doors. If it must be dried indoors then lift it from the floor and use dehumidifiers, fans and air conditioners to dry it. Once it is dried it should be inspected for mold and mildew and then cleaned. The padding is replaced and then the dried carpet can be replaced.

If your wall is damaged from the leak then this is more work. Instant reaction to the event to avoid the growth of mold is vital. It should be cleaned with a water and bleach solution. This removes the possibility of mold growing in the area. Then leave it to dry thoroughly.

Repair uneven areas that had been damaged with a special paste and after it dries sand it to a nice flat surface. Again let your wall dry very well and then paint it. Hopefully you have kept the paint that you used previously but if not then you obviously must paint the whole wall.

The damage may be a little more severe and you have to replace an area in the wall. Remove the damage and replace with an appropriate sized panel. This fit should be snug. Once in place screw it to the studs behind the piece.

Cover the seams for a nice smooth effect and paint on primer. If you want to prevent stains the primer will help and it will also make the compound stick. The compound is added in stages sanding after each application. The surface is slightly rough after sanding and nearly in line with the existing wall. Painting is next and you are finished.

This is not the most serious type of water damage, however it is always a very unpleasant experience. Doing this work yourself will give you a great sense of satisfaction. You will have good memories when you look at your carpet and wall and not think of how it happened.
