Anyone who lives in an area that is prone to flooding or has a history of storms and hurricanes needs to prepare themselves by learning about water damage restoration. It’s not an easy job cleaning up after a disaster. Perhaps most importantly is drying the house as early as you can so that you are at less risk for bacteria and mold to burgeon. You also need to be aware of the diseases you or your family may be at risk for after flooding, and research how these can be treated. If you find out about these risks ahead of time, you’ll be better prepared to handle them if you ever need to.
A number of things that are useful for repairing damage caused by water include air sterilizers and purifiers, dehumidifiers, and vapor steam cleaners. If you can purchase these before you are met with a crisis, you will be better off when it comes to clean up. You can use these machines to dry furniture, walls and household items if you’re flooded. This will help protect the house from bacteria and fungi.
You should always keep some masks at home so that if you have a flood, you can clean the sewage out with water and be sure to wear a mask. Not only for sewage, but when you clean anything after a flood, it’s best to wear a mask.
If you are about to start cleaning up after water damage, find out first if the house has standing water inside. If it does, you’ll want to be wearing boots and rubber gloves. Don’t go in if the structure seems unstable. As for electricity, it should be turned off with the main switch and try to keep any electrical wires dry.
Also as you are cleaning, do not try to save things that have been damaged, like old rugs, photos and books. Wet areas of the house should be dried with the dehumidifier, and the whole building will need to be disinfected with a vapor steam cleaner. Floors, cabinets and the basement should all be cleaned and dried.
Additionally, be sure to check the plumbing and electrical systems. If these require repair, it’s usually best not to attempt repairs yourself (unless you have been trained to). You should call professionals to come out and repair the systems as soon as you can. As for wood items and furniture, wood catches mold easily so if it is not thoroughly cleaned in a timely fashion, wood should be discarded.
Health risks include pneumonia, influenza and tuberculosis. The threat of such infections should be taken very seriously and these diseases can spread very quickly, so it’s important to know about them in advance. It’s a good idea to research treatment for these diseases before you encounter a flood.
Typically after floods, people are also at high risk for contamination of drinking water. That’s why people should be sure to either boil the drinking water or use a water purification system to filter it. As for dishes, these should be cleaned in hot water and carefully dried.
Anyone in an area with a record of flooding is advised to purchase flood insurance. If you’re able to research actions to take after a flood, and purchase the equipment that will help with safety and cleaning, you will be much better able to react to a flood in the event that you need to.
